When Abraham arrived in the land of Canaan, he came to the "site of the great tree of Moreh at Shechem" (Gen. 12:6), in the hill country of Ephraim in north-central Palestine. There the Lord appeared to him, promising to give him the land. From there Abraham moved southward, pitching his tent between Bethel and Ai, before going toward the Negev. After a journey to Egypt, he returned to the same place between Bethel and Ai (13:3-4). Some time later, God again appeared to Abraham, ratifying his covenant with him (Gen. 15).
